Quem já escreve bigger e more expensive sem esforço vai aprender the biggest e the most expensive rapidamente.
- Uma sílaba: acrescente -est depois de the (the tallest, the cheapest). As mudanças de ortografia seguem o mesmo padrão do comparativo: big → the biggest, nice → the nicest.
- Duas sílabas terminadas em -y: troque o y por -iest (the easiest, the happiest).
- Duas sílabas ou mais (demais casos): use the most antes do adjetivo (the most interesting, the most crowded).
| Adjetivo | Comparativo | Superlativo |
|---|---|---|
| fast | faster | the fastest |
| safe | safer | the safest |
| big | bigger | the biggest |
| funny | funnier | the funniest |
| popular | more popular | the most popular |
| comfortable | more comfortable | the most comfortable |
- This is the fastest way to get downtown.
- August is usually the driest month here.
- He is the most popular teacher at the school.
|---|---|---|
| good / well | better | the best |
| bad / badly | worse | the worst |
| far | farther / further | the farthest / the furthest |
| much / many | more | the most |
| little | less | the least |
- That's the worst excuse I've ever heard.
- This is by far the best pizza in town.
- I chose the least expensive plan.Escolhi o plano menos caro.
Depois do superlativo: in ou of?
- in para lugares e grupos vistos como um espaço ou organização: in the world, in my neighborhood, in the department.
- of para um período de tempo ou um conjunto específico de itens, geralmente com número: of the decade, of the two, of all time.
| Use in | Use of |
|---|---|
| the oldest building in the city | the worst week of my year |
| the richest man in the country | the fastest of the three runners |
| the quietest neighborhood in town | the hottest day of the summer |
| the best student in the group | the most expensive of all |
- This is the tallest building in the neighborhood.
- That was the most stressful week of the whole project.
- superlativo + present perfect com ever: the funniest movie I've ever watched. O inglês usa ever onde a gente usaria "já".
- one of the + superlativo + substantivo no plural: one of the richest countries.
- intensificadores: by far e easily reforçam a ideia (easily the worst); para posições específicas, use ordinais: the third biggest, the second cheapest.
- That's the most delicious bread I've ever tried.
- Brazil is one of the biggest coffee producers in the world.O Brasil é um dos maiores produtores de café do mundo.
- This neighborhood is easily the safest in the city.
- It's the third largest airport in the country.É o terceiro maior aeroporto do país.
Comparando coisas iguais: as + adjetivo + as
- Reforços: just as (exatamente tão... quanto), almost / nearly as (quase tão), twice as / three times as (o dobro, o triplo).
- Com substantivos: as much para incontável, as many para contável plural (as much energy as, as many options as).
- Expressões fixas: as far as I know (até onde eu sei), as soon as possible (assim que possível).
- This laptop is almost as fast as my old desktop.
- The new office is just as noisy as the old one.O novo escritório é tão barulhento quanto o antigo.
- Our rent is twice as high as it was two years ago.
- As far as I know, the store closes at nine.
A versão negativa: not as...as
Para dizer "menos... do que" sem soar duro, o inglês prefere not as...as (também existe not so...as, mais raro) em vez do comparativo direto com less. Compare três formas de passar a mesma informação:
- This café is louder than the other one. (comparativo comum)
- This café is less quiet than the other one. (correto, mas pouco natural)
- This café isn't as quiet as the other one. (a forma que um nativo realmente usaria)
- The sequel wasn't as funny as the first movie.
- This neighborhood isn't as safe as it used to be.Esse bairro não é tão seguro quanto era antes.
- I don't travel as much as I'd like to.Eu não viajo tanto quanto eu gostaria.
Exceções e casos especiais
Possessivo no lugar de the
Quando a frase já tem um possessivo (my, her, Ana's, the team's), ele toma o lugar do the; os dois juntos não aparecem.
- This is my favorite song.Esta é a minha música favorita.
- The team's biggest weakness is defense.A maior fraqueza do time é a defesa.
"A maioria" não é superlativo
Most + substantivo, sem the, quer dizer "a maioria" (most tourists, most weekends). Quando há um determinante depois, use most of (most of the tourists, most of our weekends). A forma the most of não existe.
- Most tourists visit the old town first.A maioria dos turistas visita o centro histórico primeiro.
- Most of my coworkers take the bus.
- Who arrived (the) earliest today?Quem chegou mais cedo hoje?
Erros frequentes de brasileiros
This is the beautifulest beach of Brazil.
This is the most beautiful beach in Brazil.
Adjetivos de três sílabas ou mais formam o superlativo com most, e lugares usam in, não of.
He is the most old man in the village.
He is the oldest man in the village.
The most of my friends don't drive.
Most of my friends don't drive. / Most my friends don't drive.
Para dizer "a maioria", usa-se most ou most of, nunca the most of.
My brother is as old than me.
My brother is as old as me.
A estrutura de igualdade é as...as; than só combina com comparativos (older than).
She is one of the best employee in the store.
She is one of the best employees in the store.
Depois de one of the + superlativo, o substantivo vai sempre para o plural.
That was the better trip of my whole life.
That was the best trip of my whole life.
